Remember when I left teaching... forever?
Well, maybe it wasn't forever.
Since I started my career as a writer, I've been blown away at the response from friends and strangers. On a regular basis, I get e-mails and phone calls from friends-of-friends asking how they might get started on the same career track. So, in response to those requests, I'm proud to announce that I'm going to be teaching a seminar at the Nashville Creativity Summit all about how to get started in the crazy world of writing. So the non-teacher teaches again. And I can't wait!
The conference is being hosted by The Skillery, a business that started by Matt Dudley. It's basically an online marketplace for all kinds of knowledge. Throughout the year, you can sign up for in-person classes on cloth diapering, whiskey tasting, photography, print making... almost anything! In February, the Skillery is hosting Nashville's first Creativity Summit, which will bring together all kinds of smart, entrepreneurial folks across the city to share their knowledge about what makes creative business tick. Saturday, there is a long list of successful entrepreneurs giving panel discussions etc. and Sunday (my birthday!) there will be plenty of classes to choose from: and one is mine!
Freelance Writing 101: How to Pitch
February 10, 2013 from 2:00 - 3:30 PM
NATIVE @ Marathon Village — Tickets, $25
During the class, we will discuss what it takes for a freelance writer to make it in today's economy. The first step? A really strong pitch to a receptive editor. Together, we will look at the elements of pitching, and write some of our own. Before you leave—expect to send out a few pitches that editors just can't turn down!
If you've never seen MOONBASE (Native's office), check it out! You might just want to come to get to hang out here!
Hope to see you February 10!
